If you could take just one history book to a desert island, this would be it. It is laugh-out-loud funny, but there is also a love of history and story here that is pure JOY. -- Conn Iggulden, author of the Emperor and Conqueror series
This book made me proud to be British. Ever since Britain existed as a nation, we’ve chosen only the fiercest and most fascinating enemies, and we usually put up a pretty good fight. And luckily, only recently have we started to lose to them on penalties. -- Stephen Clarke, author of 1000 Years of Annoying the French
Finally a book by Terry Deary that I don’t have to sneak into my children’s bedroom at night to steal once they’ve gone to asleep. And who better to tell us about Britain’s enemies than history’s greatest ally. Terry Deary has once again delivered a book ram-packed with mind-blowing facts, hilarious characters, and little-known tales. -- Dan Schreiber, author of The Theory of Everything Else and host of No Such Thing As a Fish and We Can Be Weirdos
Terry Deary in his inimitable style somehow manages to keep it down to just ten enemies. Hopefully none of them are unfinished business! -- Al Murray, author of Arnhem Black Tuesday (and special guest drummer on Horrible Histories)
Playful, cheeky, and very clever, this is a book for anyone who ever wished there was a Horrible Histories for grown-ups. A glorious romp through the history of Britain’s enemies. -- Kate Lister, author of A Curious History of Sex and host of Betwixt the Sheets
Told with characteristic wit and verve, this book makes you question everything you thought you knew about some of the most famous events in British history. Not just an eye-opener, but a mind-opener. -- Tracy Borman, author of The Private Lives of the Tudors and joint Chief Curator for Historic Royal Palaces
Nobody has changed history more than Terry Deary ― Big Issue

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and readable. Pity about a few errors of fact
I enjoyed reading this book and it gave a different perspective on British history, and filled in several gaps in my knowledge.Unfortunately I noticed a few errors:James II was Charles II's brother, not his sonHis opponent in the Anglo-Dutch war of 1673 was never the "future" William III of Orange except in utero - he had inherited the title at birth as his father William II had not lived long enough to see him born. (He would later also become William III of England and II of Scotland)Kaiser Wilhelm I was not Queen Victoria's son-in law: that was his son, Kaiser Friedrich III
5.0 out of 5 stars This book was bought as a gift and I have been told this was a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting book written with much humour
I've just started reading this book and there's already so many laugh out loud moments. Terry Dreary is true to form as he was with Horrible Histories. The book is enlightening and far from boring. I can't find a problem it and would highly recommend it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very happy

4.0 out of 5 stars History Through the Lens of Conflict
Terry Deary takes an innovative approach to British history by examining it through the perspective of ten significant adversaries. This fresh angle provides fascinating insights into how Britain's national identity was shaped through its conflicts and rivalries. Deary's engaging writing style makes complex historical events accessible without oversimplifying them. While some might argue that focusing on enemies provides an incomplete picture of British history, the approach offers valuable perspectives on how external threats influenced internal development. The book successfully balances educational value with entertainment.
5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
