ONE MURDER. ONE IMPOSSIBLE CASE. WHO IS GUILTY?

When hero policeman Grant Cliveden dies from a poisoning in the Old Bailey, it threatens to shake the country to its core.

The evidence points to one man. Jimmy Knight has been convicted of multiple offences before and defending him will be no easy task. Not least because this is trainee barrister Adam Green's first case.

But it will quickly become clear that Jimmy Knight is not the only person in Cliveden's past with an axe to grind.

The only thing that's certain is that this is a trial which will push Adam - and the justice system itself - to the limit. . .

About the Author

Rob Rinder is a practising criminal barrister, a broadcaster and Sunday Times best-selling author. Called to the bar in 2001, Rob went on to specialise in cases involving international fraud, money laundering and other forms of financial crime, while working in media to make law more accessible. He started his broadcast career with Judge Rinder for ITV before going on to host his own BBC 5Live series Raising the Bar. Featuring in Who Do You Think You Are?, Rob’s story resulted in creating the documentary My Family, the Holocaust and Me.

A regular host on ITV’s
Good Morning Britain, Rob co-hosts BBC Two’s Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond The Lobby and has recently filmed a new travel show, The Grand Tour, which will see Rob and his co-host Rylan retrace the footsteps of cultural greats around Italy. Shedding light on the unsolved mystery of what happened to the Princes in the Tower during Richard III’s reign for a Channel 4 documentary in 2023, Rob’s filmed a new show for the channel exploring the history of prisons which will come to our screens later this year.

In 2020, Rob was awarded an MBE for his services to Holocaust education and an honorary doctorate for his legal work.

The Trial was Rob's number one bestselling debut novel and The Suspect is the much anticipated follow-up. Both novels are inspired by Rob's own experiences as a barrister.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and intelligent legal thriller

Judge Rinder masterfully weaves together a complex web of intrigue, deception, and courtroom drama, delivering a novel that is both thought-provoking and compelling. The story unfolds through multiple perspectives, introducing a range of well-developed characters, each with their own secrets and motivations. While it took me some time to fully grasp the intricacies of the plot and the connections between the characters, this only added to the richness of the narrative. As the pieces gradually fell into place, I found myself even more engrossed, eager to see how everything would unfold.Rinder’s background as a barrister shines through in the authenticity of the legal proceedings, making the novel feel realistic and immersive. His writing is sharp, witty, and full of tension, keeping the reader on edge until the very end.Overall, The Trial is a gripping read that rewards patience and attention to detail. It’s a must-read for fans of courtroom dramas and thrillers, offering a story that is both cleverly plotted and deeply satisfying. I highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars good fun

D. · 6 March 2025

This is an entertaining read, full of well drawn characters and just enough believability to make it engrossing. All that let it down was some annoying name dropping at the beginning and a b very silly ending. I’ve already bought the second book and am very much looking forward to Adam’s next story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twisty legal who and why they dun it.

B.A.B. · 22 May 2025

Good characterisation, good plot. An intriguing insight into the world of barristers and their clients. I very much enjoyed it.

I never read robs books before, but can’t wait to read the others. the trial was a really good read with little twists and turns, comical, well descriptive, I felt amerced and engaged with the characters from the first page and couldn’t put it down, what more could you want in a book

4.0 out of 5 stars Holiday reading

W. · 13 March 2025

I had already read the second book, so decided I had better read the first. It does explain a few of the things in book 2.I would say the ending is slightly far fetched, but it's a novel.Perfect holiday reading - gripping, but not too challenging. I will be on the lookout for book 3.

3.0 out of 5 stars legal stuff at its best ….

Get into the “in’s and out’s” of the British Legal system, with a good story teller, easy to read and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bloody good read

N.K. · 11 May 2025

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I read it in 2 days and twice reluctantly put it down to make dinner for husband !!This is so well written you can picture the characters, it's witty and made me giggle with the description of the main characters ' Jewish mum !! The novel is about a young junior marketer's fight for justice for a career criminal charged with murder. It's full of twists and turns with the actual instigator not who you actually think it is.This book is brilliant and I hope that Rob Rinder writes more about Adam Greens adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A riveting read

Very well wrote, gripping and interesting. Gives a small insight to the chambers at work. Could not put it down until I’d finished.

Fairly formulaic

I was riveted by the book - the plot, the dialogue, the descriptions, in fact the whole thing, with its legal descriptions and it’s gentle humanity. Every spare minute I’d be back into reading it. Many more books hoped for, please sir.

Page turner

Witty and a good insight into trial lawyers and how they move around in chambers and court rooms. Deep plot as well.
