Description:

About this item:

A stunning directory of 100 adaptable, inspirational crochet stitch patterns and 3 gorgeous projects from best-selling author and YouTube sensation, Bella Coco (Sarah-Jayne Fragola).

Discover Sarah-Jayne’s clear and friendly teaching style, known and loved by her more than 2 million online followers.

Following on from her best-selling first book, You Can Crochet with Bella Coco, comes this practical guide to over 100 carefully curated stitch patterns.

Starting with the key things you'll need to get crocheting, from advice on yarn and notions to essential techniques, Sarah-Jayne then takes you through a gorgeous collection of stitches – from simple repeat patterns to incredible textured designs. The stitches are divided into four sections – ‘basic stitches’, ‘simple stitch combinations’, ‘textured stitches’ and ‘squares and shapes’ – so you can easily search for a stitch that suits your desired finish.

Discover:

  • A clear, overhead, close-up photograph of each of the 100 stitches worked up into a swatch, so you can examine the stitch repeats closely;
  • All stitches categorised by difficulty level, from easy to advanced, so you can choose a stitch that suits your skills;
  • Stitch multiples/repeats for every stitch pattern, so that you can calculate how to work the pattern into an upcoming project;
  • Written instructions (including both UK and US terms) on starting the stitch, how to work the repeat and how to finish off.

As a bonus, you’ll also find Sarah-Jayne’s five favourite border stitches – all photographed and clearly explained – for edge-finish inspiration, and three stunning projects that include a selection of stitches in the library: a basketweave tote bag; a gradient crochet wrap; and a colourful, multi-textured patchwork blanket.

Whether you’re looking for new ideas, or trying to remember that perfect stitch, this is a timeless book that you can delve into now and for years to come.

Review

In her second book, popular English YouTuber Fragola showcases a variety of fun and interesting crochet stitches. In addition to the general introductory guidelines on yarn and basic techniques, the author includes an anatomy-of-a stitch section. This section should be bookmarked when crocheters work on some of the more advanced stitches that require working within an area beyond the top loops. The stitch library features 75 stitches ranging from beginner stitches to fun, simple stitch combinations to the more complicated textured stitches. Each stitch pattern includes a clear photograph, a skill level, stitches used, pattern notes, and instructions. U.S. crochet terminology is used, with British terms in italics within brackets. After the stitch library, 25 patterns are given for squares and other shapes as well as five borders. The book ends with patterns for three projects―a wrap, a tote and a blanket―that utilize some of the stitches detailed in the book. The range of stitches is impressive, and libraries looking to replace older or worn crochet-stitch guides should consider this one.

Lynnanne from Booklist

Following her book You Can Crochet with Bella Coco, which invites new crocheters to pick up their hooks and create, Fragola has crafted a veritable encyclopaedia of her favorite stitches in this handy reference for crocheters of all skill levels. She offers a guide to the basic tools, yarn types, gauge, and essential stitches, all neatly and clearly illustrated with photographs (and aesthetically pleasing because of the calm color palette woven throughout the book). The section on the anatomy of a stitch clearly illustrates the V’s comprising each stitch in a chain, something that can feel a bit esoteric for crafters at first, and each of the stitch types that follows is demarcated based on skill level, multiples, stitches used, pattern notes, and instructions. Fragola also includes patterns that spotlight some of her favorite stitches, including a tote, a blanket, and a wrap that will serve as fun projects and templates for ways to mix and match stitches.

VERDICT: A clear and comforting collection of crochet stitches that will serve as a useful guide as well as a source of inspiration.

-- Emily Bowles ― Library Journal

There are a number of crochet stitch dictionaries on the market, from the Harmony Guide to Crochet Stitches with accompanying CD. This new book has introductory pages that include a gallery, a description of tools, yarns and basic techniques, and also a useful page on the anatomy of a stitch with explanations of the various parts. There are about 60 different stitches illustrated plus around 40 different motifs and five edgings. The last chapter contains three projects one of which is a blanket of rectangles made using some of the different stitches.

The stitches that Sarah-Jayne illustrates mainly produce a fairly solid fabric. There are very few lacy fan or shell stitches, even the Solomon's Knot stitch - which usually has a very airy feel to it - looked like rows of interlocking chains. All the stitches could of course be worked on a larger hook to give a more open effect if desired.

The stitches are all very clearly illustrated with one to each page and a side bar describes the required skill level, the stitches used to create each pattern, and the multiple of stitches required to form a complete set. The pictures are large but the font for the instructions is quite small and uses US terms with UK terms in parentheses in a lighter font, which I found surprising as the author is UK-based and the book is published by Search Press.

On the whole the book is useful for the less experienced crocheter with lots of additional information about gauge and blocking, plus a comprehensive page of abbreviations describing exactly how high to pull up the loops for each new stitch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots to explore, beautiful clear photography

It's very good value for money, cheaper than the corresponding card deck, although obviously less portable. The book has a beautiful layout and clear photographs - I am very impressed.It would make an ideal Christmas gift for a keen crocheter and useful for all levels from a beginner upwards. The colour-coded pages make it easy to use as a reference book to dip into. There is so much to explore as it is packed with hints and tips. The spine opens out well, almost flat when using it to crochet from.The book gives preference to US crochet terms with the UK terms afterwards in brackets each time. I am getting used to US terms now, so I don't find this to be a problem. Large charts are also provided in the shapes and squares section. The shapes and squares section also gives instructions for unusual shapes such as half-hexagon (horizontal) and half-hexagon (vertical).Well done to the author (Sarah-Jayne Fragola) and the Search Press publication team. My only criticisms of the book is that it should contain more projects, showing the various stitches in finished items and I would like to have seen more borders. An idea for a Crochet Stitch Library - Volume 2?

I ordered this book and I could not wait for it to come. I was not disappointed with the entire book and the quality. I love that it has US terminology (as well as UK). It has different skills levels and the instructions are well written. I showed it to ladies in a crochet group I go to and they all said it is a really good book. I have ordered the card set for when I am at group. If you love to make blankets and want to learn new stitches then this book is a must. I love it.

Wow, I was really excited when this became available for pre-order and I was not disappointed! Just like the first Bella Coco book, you really get your money’s worth. It is packed full of crochet knowledge with great descriptions and large, clear pictures. It’s way thicker than i thought it would be and even the paper feels of exceptional quality. Would make a great gift. The terms are written in US first with UK in brackets after each instruction but it is easy to read. Love it!

I love this book it has so many different stitches to offer and is clear and easy to follow. It maybe in US terms but that doesn’t affect it at all. I think it’s a good idea to learn both Uk and US terminology. Well done Sarah-Jayne another brilliant book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for everyone starting out or wanting a great reference book

N. · 12 June 2025

This book has been invaluable for re-learning crochet after a 20 year hiatus on my learning journey. I love how clearly it is laid out and the written explanations are simple and clear. I can now not only follow the written pattern but can understand how to read from a crochet diagram. Hoorah! I really love the pattern reference images at the front of the book that show clearly what level of complexity a stitch is and also whether it's for a beginner, intermediate or advanced crocheter. It's a must have reference book as well as being perfect for someone brand new to crochet.

Excellent

Confuso

a. · 27 April 2025

A FANTASTIC beginner’s companion book!

I am SO GLAD I purchased this book and honestly wish I had done so sooner. I should have bought “A to Z of Crochet” and this because together they are a PERFECT combo for anyone new to the hobby. I only started teaching myself back in October of 2024 so I had something to keep my hands busy while watching hockey games with my bf.One of the main things that makes this book stand out above the rest is the explanations for things such as gauge and blocking. In my experience, these things weren’t covered very well in many beginner books and I often found both the explanations and descriptions of topics such as gauge or blocking to be vague and not very helpful for most beginners.This book handles both topics exceptionally well, in my opinion. The explanations are detailed but not overly wordy and are easily digestible and the layout avoids large blocks of text so it’s easy to reference quickly.The other standout feature of this book for me was the images. I’m a very visual learner but often prefer books vs videos to learn new skills and the images in this book are PERFECT to help clarify things that I often find videos move too quickly for me to really see which loop I’m referencing and I’m constantly pausing and rewinding. You’ll see in the images how she actually outlines EXACTLY which loop or which part of the stitch she’s referring to in the explanation.With amazing explanations and photos, an easy to read format and layout, and a wealth of reference for popular /common stitches found in most modern crochet patterns, this book is a MUST HAVE for anyone looking to get into crochet. I highly recommend for any beginners or intermediate as a solid addition to your learning/reference library!
