Discipleship On The Edge: An Expository Journey Through the Book of Revelation

Description:

Revelation is probably the most read, but least understood book of the Bible. History is replete with examples of how not to interpret it, and books featuring end-of-world prophecy claims based on Revelation consistently top the bestseller lists. But how can the message of such an enigmatic book be applied to our lives today? In Discipleship on the Edge, Darrell W. Johnson drives home the challenging and practical message of Revelation in thirty carefully crafted sermons. Paying careful attention to the original context of Revelation and the circumstances surrounding its composition, Johnson shows that the book is not a "crystal ball" but rather a "discipleship manual." Thoroughly researched and yet accessible, this collection of sermons is a helpful resource for pastors and small group leaders who are looking for models to help them preach and teach the message of Revelation in a time when there is much confusion about the end times.

Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars A readable and helpful commentary through Revelation that makes good sense and is accessible.

R.o.W. · 13 January 2025

Revelation is a difficult book to get a grip on. This book navigates the territory very well and if you only read one book on Revelation I'd go for this one. (It does not get bogged down in intricate details but it is certainly nOT superficial in its scope.)

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on Revelation ever!

O.a. · 15 September 2024

Interpreting Revelation as its symbols and numbers would have been interpreted by its first readers rather than by 21st century teachers, this book makes utter sense of the book, removing the fear and restoring hope

Eloquent, faith stirring and biblically grounded text that unpacks the final book of the bible that for too long has been shrouded in hysteria and for my own part ignorance. Johnson shows how the text is the culmination of the whole biblical canon. Focused on the person and glory of Jesus

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book!!

We just LOVE Darrell Johnson - a incredible guide through an often misunderstood and difficult to read book. We are using this book as an accompaniment to his series of sermons on Revelation which we have downloaded from the First Baptist Church website in Vancouver.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very helpful guide to understanding the Revelation

c. · 6 January 2021

As a reasonably new Christian. Only 5 years saved I had until now stayed clear of reading revelation. I downloaded this book and read it alongside my Bible. Darrell goes through the book at an easy pace and it certainly helped me to understand it. Sometimes the numerology got a bit confusing for me but that’s just me. Overall I would recommend this book to anybody wanting to read through revelation this is a useful guide.

Truly blessed as I go through this book, a refreshing look at the truth of Gods word, recommend it to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most readable expostion

This book is written with clear and concise expression yet adds detail and understanding to the book of Revelation. It is absorbing, informative and seeks to balance the views of others in a consistent way.

Revelation Revealed

A.C. · 8 December 2021

In many years of Biblical study, this is the best book I have read on Revelation. It is obvious it has been a consuming passion for the author. His style feels like it bypasses many of the extreme interpretations, which get lost in interpretive method. This book gives an in-depth but easy to follow understanding that places JESUS Christ clearly at the centre and disstills the discipleship implications through out the book. Background notes and references are very helpful . A great addition to the library of any serious bible student. Well done Darrell Johnson

Finally, Revelation That Reveals.

V.I. · 26 December 2024

Darrell lays out convincing interpretations of difficult pictures into applicable truths of Jesus, the Ancient of Days. When viable alternatives for interpretation exist, he lays out the rationale of each and explains why he chooses a specific one.No matter what you conclude (from previous study or through this experience), you will walk away more in love with the creator of the universe and marvel at his amazing plan for believers. The consistency of scripture from Genesis to Revelation is astonishing. This was my 3rd commentary on Revelation. and by far the most inspirational, not just “heads knowledge.”

One of my top books!

K. · 8 March 2024

Wow, what an amazing book! This book opened my eyes, and gave a lot of clarity to things I had little understanding of before. I learned a lot of new information, and gained deeper spiritual insights from the explanations about the symbolism and imagery. I didn’t want this book to end! What a beautiful balance between theology, history, and what this all means for us personally. It helps bring perspective to the past, present, and future - especially the reality of what this means for us now. “Things are not as they seem!”

Sehr erhellendes Buch

J. · 7 August 2013

Deshalb: Nur Mut!

is easy to read and understand

E.S. · 15 June 2016

This book was an amazingly helpful examination of the book of Revelation. Darrell Johnson's work, while providing very academic insights, is easy to read and understand. Johnson is invested in helping people to understand what Revelation would have meant to its first hearers. The amount of historical context that Johnson provides is wonderful and truly brings the writing to life. Once we understand what the book originally meant in the first century there are many natural applications to today. The overarching theme, is that Revelation is a discipleship manual, that helps followers of Christ to become better followers. Johnson, is a truly pastoral voice, and I cannot recommend this book enough if you want to learn about discipleship. The only complaint that I have is that some of the analysis of the text, at times, can seem a bit cursory. At times, I often felt unconvinced with parts of conclusions. However, nothing that is written in unhelpful or wrong, there are simply times where further study or connections would lead to more evidence for the conclusion. Also, as this book is not supposed to be an exhaustive commentary, but rather a revealing of the main points of the text, it does an excellent job.
