5.0 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICENT COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT OF VANISHED INDUS EMPIRE. STRIKING PARALLELS WITH INCAS
MAGNIFICENT COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT OF VANISHED INDUS EMPIRE. STRIKING PARALLELS WITH INCASThe Indus Valley gave birth to the first Empire, conquered in a century, bigger than the other ancient civilizations combined, up to 5m people, 700 miles across, with standardised weights, many towns , town planning, drainage and baths, common production centres of excellence, at its peak from 2600 – 1800 BC , preceding and surviving Sargon’s empire in Akkad. They built the first sea going ships, which Sargon could see from his palace, well before any hard evidence elsewhere.Lots of excellent new archaeology in recent years, going down to small town and village level. Lots still to do.And then all but vanished into the mud, dear reader. Civilisation is not a one way street.More pictures would have been good, but you can find them on the internet.STRIKING PARALLELS WITH INCA EMPIREBuilt up by main force in a century, home grown, no external threats, divided into four major Regions, centres of standardised excellence for important products and services, standard town layouts and buildings. Conquered tribes were made to move down to less defensible new towns – also nearer their fields. Incas governed 8m people, 2,000 miles long, 80 uniform provinces.Written language can be over-estimated. The Incas had none, but carried out accurate, detailed census-taking and taxation, across 80 provinces, by memory men using knotted ropes. Andes are very steep, so Incas had no wheels, instead used roads and lots of llamas. See The Incas by Terence N D’Altroy (2nd Edn).
Brilliant
Excellent work by a top academic.
The Ancient Indus Valley: enjoyable, fascinating reading
This book treats the known facts, questions and mysteries of the Indus Civilization with thoroughness and care. The author discusses many aspects of the ancient civilization in depth, speaking to the lay reader with clarity and evident mastery of the subject. Jane McIntosh treats the unknown, of which there is a great deal, judiciously. For example, she has a chapter on the language in which she presents the possible historical links to the unsolved puzzle and explores the various theories that have been put forth, but, while she offers her thoughts, she takes no strong stand of her own. The author also describes in some depth the cultures with which the Indus Civilization had ties so the reader experiences a broader perspective of the age and the surrounds. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is fascinated by the Indus Civilization.
