A funny and simple story with little (but very effective) text. You can't help falling in love with this sweet crocodile and it did remind me of my childhood fear of having a plant growing inside my stomach! The illustrations are ever so lovely, I really like the bold limited palette. For little and big kids that may or may not like watermelon.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 5-year old students LOVE this book.

C.M. · 23 November 2019

I thought this would be too 'young' for my class of 5-6 year old students, but boy was I wrong! They absolutely loved listening to me read it to them and would ask for it again and again. I think it could be a bit boring if a new reader is reading it him/herself, but if an adult reads it with expression to them...the best! I am now buying a copy for my nephew.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amusing, simple but SO appealing!

What child does not like watermelon and what child has not asked the question, "If I eat the seeds will I grow watermelons?" In this brightly coloured book, Crocodile LOVES to eat watermelon and has done ever since he was a "tiny baby crocodile". He enjoys it at any time of day.One day though, he swallows a seed! Oops! He has all sorts of vivid thoughts of what is happening inside him until out comes a loud burp. Will he ever eat watermelon again? You'll have to read the book to find out.DELIGHTFUL!

Our favorite watermelon book

e.c. · 17 July 2015

It is difficult to believe this is a first for the author. It connects perfectly with children AND adults. After all, it is most often parents that buy children books. It was fun reading it with my 5 years old daughter, and it has stayed on top of the pile of her favorite books since then. She reads again and again. Crocodiles are fascinating for children, and the one in the book is so cute.

A Harrowing Account of Addiction, Recovery, and Relapse

R.T. · 17 March 2025

Greg Pizzoli’s The Watermelon Seed offers a deceptively simple yet profound exploration of addiction, recovery, and relapse. Through the crocodile’s obsessive love for watermelon, his panic upon swallowing a seed mirrors the fear and anxiety of losing control. The cycle of indulgence, dread, and inevitable return to the source of both pleasure and distress reflects the cyclical nature of addiction. Pizzoli’s playful illustrations mask a darker undercurrent: the crocodile knows watermelon may harm him — yet he cannot resist. A chillingly accurate portrait of the addictive mind, wrapped in the guise of a children’s story.

かわいい

2才の子供へ。外国の絵本なので仕方ないですが角に痛みが少しありましたが私は気になりません。イラストが可愛いので子供も喜んでいます。

Niente di che

The media could not be loaded. Sono un pò indifferente. I disegni sono belli ma sinceramente non ho capito perché ha vinto qualche premio il libro. La storia è abbastanza noiosa.
