Michael is coming undone.
Reeling from his wife's departure, increasingly reclusive, taking himself on long, solitary walks across the moors and fells.

When a persistent mutual friend and some very English weather conspire to bring them together, Marnie and Michael suddenly find themselves alone on the most epic of walks and on the precipice of a new friendship.

But can they survive the journey?

Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and lovely story!

V.B. · 6 September 2025

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I really really enjoyed this book. Nicholls writes so well and the story just flows and he really gets people and their emotions. The backdrop of the landscape and the walking aspect, along with the 'Geography' and the 'literature' themes are really interesting and it makes you want to try it yourself - the walk. The characters of Marnie and Michael are really likeable and you find yourself rooting for them and wanting them to get together and have a happy ending. I read this quicker than any book I have read in ages as I wanted to know what was going to happen so this says something! Just fab. Read it!

4.0 out of 5 stars One foot in front of the other!

H. · 5 August 2025

Marnie & Michael's relationship is not a whirlwind of passion but a slow-burn of shared silence, awkward conversations, & the gradual peeling back of layers. It's a love story for the modern age—messy, hesitant, & all the more believable for it.The setting itself becomes a third character in the book. The stunning English landscape, meticulously described, serves as more than just a backdrop. The act of walking, of putting one foot in front of the other, becomes a metaphor for their emotional journeys. As they navigate the physical terrain, they also navigate their pasts, their fears, & their hopes for the future. The novel takes its time, allowing the reader to fully immerse themselves in the characters' internal worlds & the simple, quiet beauty of their journey. It's a story about the small moments—the shared glances, the comfortable silences, the simple act of being present; a testament to the idea that love & hope can be found not in grand gestures but in the quiet, everyday moments of life.A poignant exploration of second chances, the power of human connection, & the simple, profound act of finding your way back to yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant read

H.S. · 22 October 2025

I read this book whilst having a holiday in The Lake District so I found it quite fitting. Marnie and Michael are the main characters and I love the dynamic between them, it was a lovely story to connect with and also I liked the different parts of the walks that David described as I have been on some of them and they are breath taking beautiful. David has such a lovely way of connecting to his readers by adding warmth and comfort and also by writing so freely that the words flow so beautifully. It was a captivating story that I will treasure forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read!

This was our chosen read for my local book club, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.I thoroughly enjoyed this book.Loved the spark between Michael and Marnie. They just seemed to be on the same wavelength.... and got along so well!Charming storyline with wonderful characters and a lovely HEA.

3.0 out of 5 stars An ok read

I thought this was ok. Not one I would read again. The end was disappointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read Good characters touching and amusing

It's a fun read enjoyed

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, predictable story line, well worth the read

J. · 20 September 2025

Just finished this last night, and it's a nice, easy to read, well written simple story. It's hard to find authors who write so well that the words flow and are a joy to read. David Nicholls manages to do this, weaving a predictable story around a coast to coast walk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean and wholesome romance

J.U. · 14 October 2025

I'd had this on my TBR pile for a while and then it was chosen for a book club read so I was happy. I've read a few books by this author and always enjoyed them - it's also good to see the success of the recent TV adaptation. This was first published in 2024. There are 345 pages divided into ten days which are then grouped into 5 parts. Each day starts with a graphic showing a section of a walk to be done and each contains several chapters titles with their main topic. The idea of writing a book around a walk has been used a few times by authors (fiction and non-fiction) and I was interested to see what David Nichols would do.At the start there is a map of the whole journey. I love a map in a novel as it gives structure and build expectations of an authentic setting. The two main characters are introduced in a sensitive way that immediately gets the reader to like them - great start!!There is a gentle predictability to the progress of the story which is handled in a lovely way. From the beginning you are rooting for Marie and Michael to get together.I thought that Michael agreed too quickly to the walk and felt that a longer build up would be better but I understand the author wanted to get on with the main thrust of the story. The first meeting is cheesy but I adored the casual chemistry between them on the beach when talking about pebbles and I found myself immediately invested in their relationship.Throughout the book there are human observations that I loved - I could imagine myself in the awkward situation of meeting someone new and the imbalance of stilted conversation. I laughed a lot while reading about their interactions. I also loved the absurdity of everyday activities that are given a big focus - washing socks in the sink and ranking dresses as examples.Between the couple there is a jokey familiarity that says a lot about their growing affection. There are many obstacles but the reader is encouraging them at every point. Each aspect of the book felt very human. Seeing into the heads of both people exposed anxieties that are felt by everyone. The story also shows each through the eyes of the other as they gradually realise their affection is growing.People make mistakes in relationships and we see plenty of those here which was endearing.I raced to the end to find out how these two would get together and was really surprised by the final few chapters - great idea not to put in predictable pathways. The product pages describes this as "Clean and wholesome romance" and I think this is a perfect description.

An interesting and enjoyable read

Well done - yet again - David Nicholls. Interesting characters, good story. Shows why leopards can't change their spots!

The wry humor. The WRITING! Really a wonderful read. Nuanced characterization and conversations that go deep. My only complaint—wasn’t ready for it to end!

LOVE IT

S.7. · 31 January 2025

After falling in love with One Day, I had high hopes for You Are Here, and David Nicholls did not disappoint. His signature blend of humour, warmth, and emotional depth is as strong as ever. It may not have the same sweeping romance as One Day, but it’s a touching and tender journey in its own right. Loved it and now I’m determined to read all of his other books too.
