Keyes is a powerhouse. My Favourite Mistake is not just a fizzy romantic comedy, but also a piece of social commentary. Her protagonist’s voice is crystal cut with observations about gentrification, sexism and an economic system that tells women they are nothing without expensive serums and Peloton machines ― The Sunday Times
What heaven . . . wish it could go on forever -- Nigella Lawson
Warmhearted and deftly plotted page-turner. A celebration of kindness: that of family and friends ― Sunday Telegraph
Sharp and funny ― Guardian
Keyes’s prose whisks you through her tales ― she has an instantly endearing turn of phrase and an acute sense of comic timing ― The Times
You are all in for a treat. My Favourite Mistake is by turns hilarious and heart-breaking, with a very satisfying mystery at the heart of it too -- Elly Griffiths
The biggest treat. I've laughed, I've blushed and I've cried. How does Marian do it? Just a beautiful, hopeful story -- Jennie Godfrey
Funny and moving and very sexy -- Liz Nugent
Unbelievable…so much talent -- Chris Evans

Marian is a great story teller. She tells it from the heart and keeps it real
4.0 out of 5 stars Witty and a good read
Another story about one of the Walsh sisters. This time Anna second eldest who has recently given up her high powered job in New York and ended a long term relationship to return to Ireland. She takes a job helping a friend discover who is sabotaging a newly built coastal retreat and gets to know the locals . She gets reacquainted with Joey her best friend's ex whom she has mixed feelings for as they have a complicated history. It is another cleverly written story. Perhaps rather too long and could be shorter and punchier in the middle. Some great lines to enjoy.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great holiday read
I bought this as a holiday read and I loved it. I will definitely read more by this author.
5.0 out of 5 stars My Favourite Mistake
Another great book by Marian Keyes. Great to read about the Walsh family again. It’s five stars from me. Great book.
3.0 out of 5 stars Should’ve been shorter, far too much ‘padding’ out
I read it all, but wow, was it was a long old slog to do so. It could have been cut down considerably and therefore been more enjoyable; instead it waffled on far too long about the holiday homes, and was literally full of meaningless characters that made brief appearances and were then repeatedly referred to as if you could possibly keep track of so many characters with so little context.I did like the main character thankfully, but her family just got beyond annoying for me. The Walsh family “loveable, old Irish” sctick is dated and not in the least bit amusing - it’s just got irritating now. The mother isn’t funny whatsoever; she’s just self entitled and rude, same with the God awful best friend in the story, Jacqui. Disappointing read and difficult to get through with far too much fannying about for my liking.
5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it !
This is My first ever book review but I have loved every minute of both of Anna’s books and I felt the need to share. When I started the first book (is anybody out there) I didn’t think it was my type of book but I was soon emotionally involved and loved Anna and every minute of her story.Straight away I had to get the second ( my favourite mistake) as I was desperate to know how she was doing and I’m so pleased I did I loved it ! I loved Anna and all the other characters and the best end I could have asked for . Both books made me laugh and cry , I didn’t think I could enjoy it as much as rachel’s story but I did. I’m now completely gutted I’ve finished it but I know I’ll definitely read them again sometime 😊
4.0 out of 5 stars Good book
She’s a really good writer, she was a brilliant one.
5.0 out of 5 stars my favourite Welsh novel so far
I do love a Marian Keyes book and I especially love the books about the Welsh family. I downloaded this for my holidays without actually realising it was about Anna Welsh and it felt like going home to familiarity. I knew lots of the characters and they never cease to make me smileYou know you’re going to get a happy ending but I still always shed a tear when it happens.Buy it and read it- you won’t regret it
Classic Marian Keyes, which is a great thing
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Love returning to the craziness and warmth that is the Walsh family. Another enjoyable read, yes you kinda know it’ll all work out in the end, but it’s the journey getting there that is the most fun.
Another Marian hit
***Mild spoilers***I pre-ordered My Favourite Mistake as soon as I found out it would be published – that's how I go about Marian Keyes' novels. Months later, I found out it was a sequel to Anybody Out There, my second favorite Walsh novel. I reread it and counted down the minutes until I could get started with My Favourite Mistake.I absolutely love how Marian is able to show characters who have been through so much and who have changed and grown and succeeded and lost, all the while maintaining their personalities. It's amazing that there are 7 books in the series, and all the characters feel real and true to their initial depictions.I was torn between reading this in one sitting or making a slow read – I wanted to enjoy it and to really take in every scene, so I ended up taking my time with it, enjoying it over a couple of weeks instead of diving into in a few days.It wasn't always an easy read, Anna has been through a lot, but I really appreciate how many aspects were dealt with. Covid and the pandemic are a big part of what triggers a massive change in her, yet I wasn't annoyed or disgruntled when the topic came up because it's more of a passing circumstance than *the thing*. Jumping right back with all the Walshes was great fun and interesting, as the characters continue going through plenty, and even if I'm not quite there age-wise, I did appreciate Anna's struggles with menopause, how her childfree lifestyle came to be, and, well, what brought her to leave The Best Job in the World to move to Ireland.I will say, I'm rounding up the rating here – I'd say it's 4.5. My issues had to do with some of the obstacles regarding the venture and how at times it all seemed a bit too much, too big, for the type of novel when I think about the problems faced in other Walsh stories, and I felt iffy about Jacqui. Yes, we get to hear her side of the story (briefly), and it's great that they reconnect, but while she had good intentions, I had the sensation that her apologies fell a bit short. She barely recognizes any of what she's done and the conversation with Anna felt a bit too one-sided in the sense of only Anna was truly apologetic and open to hearing everything Jacqui had to say, and truly acknowledging it, while Jacqui kept justifying her own actions rather than being open to the idea that she may have also been out of line and pretty selfish. So that part was a bit insufficient for me and left me with a slightly bitter taste in my mouth. But other than that, I loved coming back to the Walshes, greatly enjoyed seeing the family and getting caught up with them, and the way the story ends. I don't know if this is the final Walsh story or not, but if it is, I can only say that the final words are a great sendoff.
So good that I dreaded finishing it
I was reduced to tears at the end because Marion always writes with such richness and accuracy about every day stuff us mortals experience but can't express! Thank you Marion you always enrich and fill my mind and body with happiness and warmth!!
Love it! Excellent holiday read
After the first page you feel completely absorbed by this page turner with the usual suspects of the Walsh family.
