About this item:

The Sunday Times bestseller

This is the story of a simple idea that turned into a global movement. This is the story of parkrun, told for the very first time from the man who started it all.

Paul Sinton-Hewitt’s love for running was forged through a difficult childhood. It gave a young boy a sense of freedom and helped him build a life for himself. Years later when he suffered a serious injury that held him back from competitive running, Paul felt he’d lost all purpose in life.

That’s when he came up with a simple idea. He would start a weekly time trial run every Saturday morning in his local park. There would be no winners or losers, it would always be free and Paul would be there every week – even on Christmas Day – whether or not anyone else came. Little did he know that from just thirteen runners on that first Saturday, parkrun would grow into a 10 million strong community across five continents. Twenty years on parkrun continues to grow, bringing together people from all walks of life in search of health, happiness and community.

Filled with hope and optimism, One Small Step is a powerful affirmation of how coming together in simple ways can change our own lives and might even change the world.

Review

Parkrun gave me hope and a community in a time where I felt lost. Paul’s contribution to the world has helped so many people and understanding his story behind the worldwide movement is truly inspiring. This book is more than just a story about how parkrun began – it’s a powerful reminder about why we lace up our shoes in the first place -- Georgia Bell, Olympian and British 1500m record holder

Paul’s story is as fascinating and surprising as it is inspiring. His legacy is one of the greatest modern feel-good success stories -- Vassos Alexander, sports reporter and author of

This book is perfect to inspire those to take those first steps into running, it shows there’s still real strength and kindness in the world. Parkrun proves we haven’t lost faith in each other -- Aimee Faulkner

I was really keen to learn its origin story. It’s a great book and despite a difficult upbringing, Mr Sinton-Hewitt has shown great resilience and gone on to do great things. I hope he knows what a profound impact he’s had on so many people with their wellbeing and fitness! Highly recommend this book.

While insightful, this part didn’t fully capture my interest.Part Two:This part dove into Paul’s running, work, and family life. I still struggled a bit to stay engaged—until the end, when he started talking about his idea for the Bushy Park time trial.Part Three:Bushy Park Time Trial inspired by a want of a sense of community, purpose and to get out the house. It was great to see Paul's personal growth as well as the evolution of parkrun, from 14 participants and metal washers during event one and now 10 million registered average 300,000 taking part in over 2000 events across 23 countries.Whilst this may not have been my favourite book, I would like to show my appreciation to Paul and the wonderful parkrun community.
