The summers spent at Roseland, the sprawling ancestral home of her best friend, Eloise, were among the happiest of Cathy''s life. Tucked away on the Cornish coastline and brimming with history, Roseland seemed to belong to another century.

Cathy has barely been back since Eloise''s death a decade ago. So she is shocked when Jack, the love of Eloise''s life and father of her children, announces that he is getting married, and that the wedding will take place at Roseland.

As Cathy and Eloise''s family gather at the house for the first time in years, long buried secrets and resentments come to the surface. Nobody likes Jack''s new bride, but is she really the imposter everybody claims, or are they merely haunted by memories of Eloise? And how can Cathy look to the future, when the past refuses to let go?

Utterly captivating and beautifully told, with echoes of du Maurier''s Rebecca, this is the gorgeous new novel from the bestselling book-club champion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good.

I read it to the end, yet I didn't really say I enjoyed it much. Everyone is different, doesn't mean that I didn't find it that good, that someone else would really find it excellent. I just have my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars it grew on me

I thought it was contrived and disliked the privileged characters. In the end I was sucked into the plot , and found it a spellbinding page turner

5.0 out of 5 stars My New Favourite

I loved this book. I enjoyed Eloise which was fantastic especially considering it was a first novel. This however, goes above and beyond and joins the ranks of one of my top three favourite novels, (add I’m an avid reader). It’s a great plot full of twists and turns but above all it is beautifully written. The only downside to Judy’s writing for me is that she hasn’t written many more novels.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn’t grab my imagination

J.M. · 21 January 2024

After reading a couple of chapters I skipped to the end which I rarely do. Personally I like more description - scenery, locations, people, whereas I felt this story was just about the characters and their interaction. I also feel one should read Eloise first. But Cornwall, Manderley, the house, the Ball, the coastal cottage, Mrs Danvers, is always pictured in your mind. If you haven’t read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - give it a go!
