The lovely story with beautiful images really got us excited for the trip. The story brilliantly intertwines adventure, mystery, and historical intrigue, keeping my daughter and I captivated from start to finish. Winters' vivid descriptions and well-developed characters bring the world of fossil hunting to life, making it both educational and thrilling. It's a must-read for anyone who loves a gripping tale with a touch of science and history.I can highly recommend it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Book for school
What a beautiful picture book, telling the story of Mary Anning perfectly
5.0 out of 5 stars From 8 (or younger) to 80 (or older) - a wonderful book!
The Fossil Hunter is a wonderful book. Packed full of fascinating information about Mary Anning's life and the times she lived in. And, of course, her fossil and dinosaur discoveries. The illustrations are amazing. Calling them 'illustrations' doesn't do them justice. Every page of this book really is a work of art. Absolutely beautiful. The 'reading age' suggested is 7 upwards and the book is perfect for children. I don't know a child who doesn't love and isn't fascinated by fossils and dinosaurs. But really The Fossil Hunter is for everyone from 8 (or younger) to 80 (or older). I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying this brilliant book. One to treasure!
5.0 out of 5 stars One to keep
Of the many books my daughter reads, every year a few make it to the ‘keep forever’ pile - and this is one. It combines great storytelling and engaging educational content with the most wonderful illustrations. It’s age appropriate making this fascinating topic accessible for younger readers, but the whole family has read it. It’s a lovely hardback book that can be kept as a reference and we’ll be bring it with us on our next fossil hunting trip to the Jurassic coast. Also seems fitting for Anning’s work to be recognised and celebrated and in this way.
5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book
A beautiful and engaging book. This reminds me of the treasured books I used to have when I was growing up that I read through again and again - and still remember 40 years later! Very high quality illustrations - in particular the four page folds outs are magical and spectacular - and these match the text that tells the interesting and important story of Mary Anning but also includes loads of other info about fossils and their discovery, and what it tells us about the world we live on. Highly recommended.
5.0 out of 5 stars A book to treasure
Highly recommend this wonderful illustrated book by Kate Winter about Mary Anning who lived two hundred years ago and collected seashells and fossils on the beaches of Lyme Regis. She helped uncover Earth’s history. It will interest and captivate a wide age range of children as can be enjoyed on all levels. The illustrations are superb and this book opens our eyes to the past struggles of a women being heard and recognised for her contributions to science. A very special book to treasure.
