A Necklace Of Raindrops

Description:

"This is how it all began..." From 'A Necklace of Raindrops' to 'The Patchwork Quilt', here are eight classic stories to treasure and enjoy. Beginning and ending with a birthday, this spell-binding collection conjures up a world filled with magic, where wishes can come true. A necklace of raindrops that keeps its owner dry in the heaviest rainstorm; a tiger that runs faster than the wind; a huge floating apple pie with a piece of sky in it; a baker's cat who swells to the size of a whale when his mistress feeds him yeast; a house that stands on one leg - these are just some of the objects and characters that figure in these delightful stories.

I bought 2 copies for my grandchildren, one to replace a well used paperback. This is a hardback copy with really lovely magical silhouette drawings by Jan Pienkowski to illustrate the stories. Its text font is lovely too. All the stories are great reading for bedtime not too long. The Necklace of raindrops is about the North Wind being caught up, then released by a little girls godfather and how the North Wind repays the kindness of setting him free. Every birthday the girl has a raindrop with magical powers added to her necklace. One day it is stolen and so you have good and evil, it all ends happily ever after. Get this version of the book and you won't be dissappointed it will one to keep and pass on. There's nothing like a real book to hold and turn the pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars What children should remember from bedtime reading

W.i.a.h. · 16 June 2005

Amanda Craig's right - Jan Pienkowski's illustrations are truly magical, which makes it unbelievable that they'd be replaced by the bland ones of this edition.Joan Aiken's stories are perfect bedtime reading - both adult and child. They're exhilirating tales of good and evil, but tinged with an other worldliness that makes it impossible to be anything other than completely captivated. Needless to say, this is a damn fine book and you'd be an idiot not to get hold of a copy. Just try and get the Pienkowski illustrated version: they really play up to the text and make reading these lovely stories even more of a pleasure.

Great book, I remembered this book as a child from the library and sought it out online, it's been over 30 years since I last read it so it really stood out for me. The stories are serious and well written and short enough for a bedtime read. I remembered all the stories instantly on reading the book again it was a real delight and now I can read it as often as I like.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have loved this book since a teenager

I first came about this book ‘A necklace of Raindrops’ while in the library as a teenager. The inspiration and depth that of a young girl determination to get what belongs to her. I bought one for my niece.

Eight semi-fairy stories by Joan Aiken

M.A. · 3 July 2022

Eight semi-fairy stories by Joan Aiken. Two of them are about cats: "The cat sat on the mat" (and while there granted wishes) and "The baker's cat" (who was made to grow by a dosis of yeast)."A bed for the night" is about The Weevils, a playing group, not too different from Brs. Grimm's Musicians of Bremen, except that they all are human, and the Baba Yaga takes a part in the plot. And "The elves in the shelves", where all the creatures in a little girl's books come out and play.

My granddaughter loved it.

T.N. · 27 March 2013

My four year old granddaughter sat still and listened intently as I read the first story, Necklace of Raindrops to her. Later in the day, she asked me to read it again. She also liked the story, Elves on Shelves. I worried that she might not like the book because it is on my Kindle and doesn't have pictures, but it was a hit!

Great group of stories

M. · 2 January 2013

This is a great group of fairy tail type stories that most people may not be aware of. If you're looking for unique stories that are a bit different from what you might have already been exposed then this is your ticket. The pictures looked great on my Kindle Touch.
